A Hidden Gem - Cairns Northern Beaches
Yorkeys knob beach is perfect for kids and families. There are plenty of shells to be found here and ample room to build a snadcastle.
Yorkeys Knob Beach is is a popular beach to visit, especially among the locals who know how good it is here!
Situated approximately halfway between Cairns and Palm Cove in a quiet residential beach suburb.
The lifesaving huts and designated swim area is at the northern end of the beach. Please be crocodile and stinger aware! Stinger nets are usually in place from November through to May.
If you are looking for a quiet, huge and semi-secluded beach (southern end) then this is it – a hidden treasure. At first glance from the road, it doesn’t look that spectacular, but we promise you it is!
This beach stretches for 1.5 km and is really wide, the biggest beach in the Cairns area actually.
Unlike Palm Cove or Trinity Beach there are no restaurants or shops lining the esplanade here, and it doesn’t feel like a tourist spot at all, however there are now two cafes at either end of Sims Esplanade, both handy to the two different playgrounds.
Instead this is mainly a residential suburb with some holiday units and accommodation along the Esplanade. There are shops and cafes on the main street, a block back from the beach, and there is a Marina and boat club nearby.
So while there’s no holiday hustle-and-bustle atmosphere here, we think it is perfect beach for kids and families two explore, plus there are two great playgrounds, plenty of seating, tables and free BBQ’s all along the Esplanade which is pram, scooter, bike and wheelchair friendly.
At the northern end of the beach you will find many sitting areas to relax on, while over looking the stunning views. There is a rockwall here too.
There are two really good playgrounds by the Yorkeys Knob Beach. The Beach playground to the north, and the Adventure playground at the southern end. It is possible to walk, scooter or bike between the two of them, distance approx. 800 metres.
This is a great little playground suitable for young to older kids under ten, with swings, slides, monkey bars, climbing nets, fireman’s pole and climbing wall.
Located at the southern end of the beach, this adventure playground is ideal for older kids to teens. There is a toddlers section however best suited for older kids with a flying fox, climbing wall, swing net, balancing logs plus heaps more.
Nearby – on the other side of the Knob you will find the Yorkeys Knob Marina and Boat Ramp. There is a very small beach here too, though DO NOT swim here due to the presence of crocodiles!
Kite Surfing is very popular on the Yorkeys Knob beach especially in the dry season – May to November
For older teens and adults: Kite surfing is very popular at Yorkeys Knob. The best time is from May to November
